Events by Year: 2016
Each year, thousands of individuals do take the step of reporting their rape to the police and undergoing a rape kit exam. This invasive forensic examination of a victim’s body typically takes four to six hours to complete and is a testament to their hope for justice. And yet, hundreds of thousands of times, a decision is made by law enforcement and prosecutors not to process the kit for DNA evidence. It is estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits across the United States.
On Wednesday, June 1st, our San Francisco Bay Area Committee held its second TALK SF event focused on the rape kit backlog. Hosted by committee member Amy McNamara and her husband, Michael, the event gathered 45 individuals to discuss the appalling number of untested rape kits across the United States and delve into Joyful Heart’s advocacy work to enact reform on local, state, and federal levels.
In honor of Mother’s Day, next generation advocates Sophia Schrager, Ava Schrager, Emma Lasry, Ana Novogratz, and Gaby Novogratz hosted a Me&Ro shopping event on Sunday April 10th at the home of Rita Schrager to benefit the Joyful Heart Foundation’s transformative work. With our Founder & President, Mariska Hargitay; our gala co-chairs Jessica M. Ambrose, Lorraine Kirke, Sukey Novogratz, and Carrie Shumway; our staff; board of directors; and broader community in attendance, we were proud to honor Vice President Joe Biden for his commitment to ending violence against women and girls, and with Verizon, a company with a long-standing and fierce commitment to ending domestic violence. A chorus of voices joined us on stage throughout the evening to celebrate these heroes and our progress: Tina Fey, Queen Latifah, Natalie Merchant, Anthony Edwards, Samantha Ronson, Raúl Esparza, Jemima Kirke, Mark and Danielle Herzlich, Kaumaka‘iwa Kanaka‘ole, Kekuhi Keali‘ikanaka‘oleohaililani, Shawn Pimental, and more.
