CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN CAMPAIGN
Since 2006, Mariska has been a dedicated member of Safe Horizon's Champions for Children committee, which unites high-profile leaders in entertainment, industry and philanthropy who are passionate about helping Safe Horizon bring attention to the issue of child abuse on a national level. The first Champions for Children advertisements - focusing on learning the warning signs of child abuse in a major effort to build a more informed citizenry and featuring Mariska - were distributed nationwide and seen in such magazines as People, Essence, InStyle and Oprah.
In 2008, these efforts are being expanded with the Champions for Children's 2008 campaign. The new ads feature stunning images by renowned photographer Timothy White who took memorable portraits of the individuals, couples and families who support Safe Horizon. Mariska and husband Peter Hermann were photographed for the campaign, as were Malaak Compton-Rock and Chris Rock, Susan Sarandon, Iman, Veronica Webb, Colin Cowie, Justine and "Reverend Run" Simmons, Deborah Roberts and Al Roker, Marian Wright Edelman, Linda Fairstein, Mariska’s former Law and Order co-star Stephanie March and many more.
THE REDBOOK ISSUE
As a Safe Horizon Board Member and Champion for Children, Mariska is speaking out about child abuse awareness and prevention in the pages of the April issue of Redbook Magazine.
In an impassioned, exclusive interview, Mariska and fellow Champions for Children committee member Veronica Webb discuss the need to educate the public about the impact of child abuse, and how to get involved to stop the cycle, each sharing with readers their own personal journey of becoming more aware, stepping up, and taking action.
Redbook's feature also offers concrete ways to help make change, from being able to recognize the warning signs of child abuse, especially the more subtle indications and how to report it. Mariska and the Joyful Heart Foundation look forward to building their partnership and support Hope Shining, Safe Horizon's groundbreaking initiative to increase awareness, prevention and support services to empower children, families and communities impacted by violence and abuse.
