California Reception Features I AM EVIDENCE and Joyful Heart's Advocacy Efforts
Board Member Amanda Stephens and her husband, Bart, hosted a reception at their home in Tiburon on September 14.
The event brought together members of our San Francisco Bay Area Committee to discuss Joyful Heart’s advocacy work and efforts to pass rape kit reform laws in California and across the country.
Committee members wore new I AM EVIDENCE shirts—going on sale in November —to highlight Joyful Heart Founder and President Mariska Hargitay’s HBO documentary about the nation’s backlog of untested rape kits. Amanda spoke about why she joined the Joyful Heart community and her commitment to engage her friends and neighbors in our work.
During the program, Mariska introduced a clip from I AM EVIDENCE and talked about making the documentary. Chief Executive Officer Maile Zambuto provided guests with an in-depth look into our advocacy work, including our campaign to pass comprehensive rape kit reform legislation in 50 states by 2020.
Guests were also encouraged to show support for two California bills on rape kit reform. Some guests made calls to Governor Jerry Brown while at the reception to urge the state to pass the bill. The law passed October 12.
