Survivors, Celebrities, Non-Profits, Corporations and State and Local Coalitions Unite to Promote National Awareness to End Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault During NO MORE Week
NEW YORK, NY – March 8, 2015 – Today marks the launch of NO MORE Week 2015 (March 8-14). Created by NO MORE (a unifying symbol and awareness movement focused on engaging bystanders to end domestic violence and sexual assault) along with its many partners, NO MORE Week is designed to spark conversations around issues of domestic violence and sexual assault and galvanize more communities, organizations and corporations to make them a priority year-round.
Across the nation, advocates equipped with free education and awareness tools, will host more than 50 NO MORE Week events. They span a wide range of activities, including a cross-country skating event, fundraisers for local service providers, bystander education workshops, screenings of films that highlight these often hidden and stigmatized issues and the launch of state and local NO MORE campaigns.
National television events:
- USA Network and the Joyful Heart Foundation, founded by Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay, will partner to kick-off NO MORE Week on March 8th with a #NOMOREexcuses Marathon of Law & Order: SVU from 12:00pm ET – 11:00pm ET. Throughout the day, Vice President Biden, Hargitay and the current cast of Law & Order: SVU will appear in spots that focus on domestic violence and sexual assault, encouraging viewers to get involved in helping to prevent these crimes. Join the discussion on Twitter by sharing the excuses you say NO MORE to, along with hashtag, #NOMOREexcuses.
- As part of Investigation Discovery’s (ID) ongoing public affairs campaign INSPIRE A DIFFERENCE, the network is honoring NO MORE Week with a dedicated programming marathon, featuring series and specials that address domestic violence and sexual assault on Saturday, March 14 from 9am-12pm ET (8am-11am CT). ID and NO MORE encourage viewers to join the conversation on Twitter during the programming marathon to chat with domestic violence and sexual assault survivors and advocates. The launch of new, localized NO MORE campaigns:
Hawaii Says NO MORE, California Says NO MORE, Lake Tahoe Says NO MORE, Memphis Says NO MORE and Chicago Says NO MORE, will kick off during NO MORE Week, joining the ranks of dozens of other local NO MORE movements including:New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Indiana.
Corporations saying NO MORE:
- In the spring of 2015, NO MORE and Casa de Esperanza will utilize research commissioned by the Avon Foundation for Women to launch NO MÁS. This new public awareness effort will engage the Latin@ community with corporate support from the Avon Foundation for Women and Verizon Wireless, long-standing supporters of domestic violence prevention.
- Viacom, a leading media partner of NO MORE and the Joyful Heart Foundation since 2014, will soon be releasing groundbreaking new research on bystander engagement that will inform a new NO MORE PSA campaign directed by Joyful Heart's Mariska Hargitay and to be produced in partnership by Joyful Heart, Viacom and agency Y&R. The company is also working with NO MORE to expand the movement’s reach to Viacom’s diverse audiences worldwide.
- Kaiser Permanente, one of America’s leading health care providers and not-for-profit health plans, is continuing its long-term commitment to preventing domestic violence by promoting NO MORE with employees and external audiences.
- Avon and the Avon Foundation for Women have continued their long-term commitment to domestic violence awareness, prevention, and direct services by announcing more than $1.35 million to fund 19 organizations across the U.S. that support domestic violence education and direct services for victims and their families.
- Mary Kay, which just announced a new $1.25 million commitment to the loveisrespect text-for-help service which provides young people with resources and support to have healthy dating relationships, will engage its more than 2,500 employees nationwide for a NO MORE Week awareness event on March 9th.
- On March 11th national and state partners across the country will participate in a webinar focused on how to prevent and respond to domestic violence and sexual assault in the workplace. Including tools from the Avon Foundation for Women “See The Signs” bystander resources, registration for the event, “Workplace Trainings Made Simple – New Bystander Intervention Tools For Trainers,” can be accessed here.
- Prudential, a leading provider of financial and insurance services will this week continue their year-long employee wellness focus on healthy relationships entitled “Stress Busters: Fostering Healthy Relationships at Work and Beyond,” and is announcing a new conference that will be held in June 2015 with Rutgers University, focused on diversity, power and awareness of intimate partner violence and its impact on organizational success.
- Clear Channel Outdoor is donating media across its digital network in markets across the country, including New York City, for NO MORE Week.
Fundraisers:
- A group of cross-country roller skaters dressed in NO MORE t-shirts will complete days 3-10 of their 78-day skating journey from Coca Beach, Florida to Santa Monica, California. The States On Skates athletes will skate 2,823 miles in an effort to raise awareness for issues and funds for the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization that serves survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and a founding partner of NO MORE.
- Finn Partners, a global full service public relations firm and founding partner of NO MORE, will host an employee-led fundraiser on March 11th in their New York office, benefitting Sanctuary for Families, a local domestic violence shelter.
- In Wisconsin, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt and the Green Bay Packers former wide receiver Bill Schroeder, will host a NO MORE fundraiser signing autographs and taking photos with fans, to benefit the GoldenHouse shelter.
Spotlighting prevention on campus:
- In theaters “The Hunting Ground,” a new documentary exposing the prevalence of sexual assaults on U.S. college campuses, will be playing in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Berkeley, Calif. - AnnaLynne McCord, an actress and survivor of sexual assault, who has become an outspoken activist for campus awareness, is now a NO MORE ambassador and will be sharing her story during NO MORE Week.
Social activism online:
- On Twitter more than 700,000 people (and counting) will be potentially reached by the #NOMOREWeek hashtag, as more than 1,000 users have already committed to joining the social discussion beginning March 8th (join the NOMORE Thunderclap, here).
- As part of its Stumble for Good program, StumbleUpon, a digital content discovery platform with over 35 million registered users, will help support the cause by driving consumers to the NO MORE Gallery within its desktop and mobile experiences during the month of March. To-date, more than 5,000 people - many of them survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault - have already shared photos and personal statements as to why they say "NO MORE" to these issues in the NO MORE Gallery. Through their partnership, StumbleUpon and NO MORE hope to educate a new audience on the initiative and encourage more survivors and advocates to share their stories and say “NO MORE”.
- “LoveStruck”, a docu-series exploring domestic violence from all sides, will release their video teaser on YouTube (http://youtu.be/k1-FrR58XrU) for NO MORE Week. - As part of the See the Signs & Speak Out: Become an Upstander program, the Avon Foundation in March launches the #SpeakOut campaign to inspire public conversation and encourage effective bystander interventions to reduce domestic violence and sexual assault. The new #SpeakOut website includes a variety of educational materials – including videos, interactive quizzes, and graphics – where people can learn how to #SpeakOut and say #NoMore within their communities.
Appearance at SXSW:
- The "Spontaneous Speakeasy", a private venue on one of the busiest street corners for pedestrian traffic during SXSW, will once again host a NO MORE event (March 18th) with live music and fundraising to benefit the National Domestic Violence Hotline and Safe Place, an Austin, TX-based domestic violence/sexual assault organization. The event is sponsored by Delve Texas, NewTek and Tivamo.com. This is the second year that NO MORE will have a presence in Austin during SXSW in collaboration with Delve Texas and NewTek.
Key leaders in the corporate sector prioritizing domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and/or supporting NO MORE, include Allstate, Avon, Verizon, Kimberly-Clark, Prudential, Sterling Brands, and Jazz Pharmaceuticals.
NO MORE Week is an exciting time to become part of the movement to end domestic violence and sexual assault or invite someone else to get involved. Anyone can participate in NO MORE Week by: adding the NO MORE symbol to social media profile images, personalizing a “NO MORE ______” sign and sharing a photo on social media, wearing the symbol, or simply starting a conversation this week with a friend or family member about healthy relationships.
