Wellness Wednesday: Treat Your Skin to a Tumeric Mask

I'm addicted to turmeric. I started taking it years ago to help with the inflammation in my arthritic toe, but later I learned that it might aid in Alzheimer's prevention, so I doubled my dose. My mom has Alzheimer's, so I quickly made it a part of my daily prevention routine.

Turmeric, the vibrant spice that gives curries and mustards their yellow color, contains antioxidants, relieves joint pain and is known to ease digestion. Researchers now think it might even help treat cancer and Alzheimer's, making it a worthy addition to the spice rack of any health-conscious home cook. You might be surprised to learn, though, that turmeric also deserves a place in your skin care routine.

The same anti-inflammatory properties that make turmeric a good treatment for arthritis also make it an ideal beauty product. Inflammation can cause swelling and puffy skin or even acne. Curcumin, the component of turmeric responsible for most of its benefits, eases inflammation to leave skin smooth and glowing.

Raid your kitchen cupboards and make your own turmeric mask at home with this simple recipe, suitable for all skin types. And no need to worry about breakouts—both turmeric and honey have antimicrobial properties, making this mask appropriate for even blemish-prone skin. Skin-Soothing Turmeric Mask

  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons organic honey

Mix ingredients in a small bowl. After cleansing, spread the mask on your face and leave for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse and enjoy brighter, healthier skin.
