Mariska Hargitay Backs Expansion of NY’s DNA Database

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed making New York State the first state in the country to expand its DNA database to include anyone who has been convicted of a crime. In his annual State of the State Address, Cuomo said he would seek to expand the database to cover all crimes which would result in preventing future crimes and would help exonerate wrongfully accused individuals.

Groups begin statewide child abuse prevention campaign

The Hawai‘i Children’s Trust Fund partnered with the Joyful Heart Foundation to begin a statewide public awareness campaign called “One Strong ‘Ohana.” The groups will integrate television, radio, online and print public service announcements with grassroots programs, organizers said in a news release.

The study, "Perceptions of Child Abuse and Neglect in Hawaii," found that 47 percent of Hawaii County residents say they know a victim of child abuse. It also found that 89 percent of Big Islanders believe child abuse is a major problem.
