Wellness Wednesday: After-Sun Remedies
Hi friends,
Hopefully you don't need these tips this summer, but just in case you happen to get a bit too much sun, these remedies will soothe and restore your skin naturally. Take care of yourself!
xoxo,
Sukey
It's only natural to love the sun—it helps our bodies make vitamin D and its rays feel so good on our skin. We do our best to protect our skin by using organic sunscreen and limiting sun exposure, but we know how easy it is to overdo it on a beautiful summer day. Here are some simple, natural ways to soothe and restore skin that’s had a bit too much of a good thing.
Soothing Post-Sun Soak
Calm overheated skin with a lavender and chamomile bath. Add these essential oils to your bath:
- 2 tablespoons diluted lavender oil
- 2 drops lavender essential oil
- 1 drop chamomile essential oil
Use lukewarm water and drop a few ice cubes in for a cooling effect.
Aloe-Lavender Skin Mist In a spray bottle, mix:
- ½ cup aloe vera gel
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
Refrigerate and apply whenever skin feels burned or tender from too much sun. An added benefit for the next summer outing? Lavender repels mosquitoes.
Restorative Oil Blend
Massage this essential oil blend into your skin to make it soft and smooth again. The apricot oil, high in vitamin E, protects against future skin damage.
Combine in a bottle and shake gently:
- 1 cup sweet almond oil
- ½ cup jojoba oil
- 2 tablespoons apricot kernel oil
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
Optional: add 3 drops of ylang ylang, 2 drops of rose and 1 drop of patchouli for a more exotic scent.
For best results, first dry brush and take a shower. Apply blend to moist skin.
The Well Wisdom: The ancient Romans poured lavender essential oil into their famous baths to rehydrate skin exposed to the strong Italian sun. Lavender is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and helps soothe the sting of sunburn. Mix a few drops with a carrier oil, like almond or castor, and rub it into scars to help them fade, or apply it to rashes, eczema or insect bites to soothe and heal.
