Wellness Wednesday: Change Your Destiny, One Breath at a Time

Hi friends,

It's a glorious time of year, but it can also be a stressful one. Make sure to take the time to breathe!

Don’t like what’s going on in your life? Before you do anything radical, try a simpler approach. You already know that the breath is a powerful tool; the next step is to harness that power. Make a positive change in your life by making a positive change to your breathing pattern.

Excited thoughts cause excited breathing, which can lead to quick and reactive decisions. Sad thoughts bring about a dull, heavy breathing pattern that can make it hard to take any action at all. Positive, happy thoughts give rise to effortless deep breathing and a calm mindset. The breath and thought patterns vibrating within you help form the words that you speak, shape the actions you take and affect the energy you attract.

Negative feelings happen, but you possess all you need to counteract them. Use your breathing to create positive energy, and let this tiny action ripple from your breath to your mind and out into your life.

If anxiety causes your breath to quicken, breathe through your nose until it's slowed. Take a few deep inhales and exhales and envision cleaning the old air out of your lungs and filling them with fresh, new air.

If you are feeling angry or stressed, fold forward at the hips, letting your torso hang down toward the floor. If you feel tightness in the lower back and hamstrings, bend your knees a bit so that your hips rotate over the legs. Now, lengthen your inhale and control your exhale to match it. Try to stay here for one minute. Then, slowly roll up to standing and take note of how the world looks.

If you are feeling low in energy or emotion, stand up with your feet hip-width apart. As you inhale, take your arms up to the sky. As you exhale, send your arms out and down by your side. Do this 10 times, connecting your breath with the movement of your arms. Slow the movement of both.  On the last round, keep your arms in the air for 10 smooth breaths through your nose, then gradually lower them down.

Tap the Well: Every breath you take reverberates throughout your body and is connected to the vibrations in your mind—which eventually become your thoughts. Our thoughts affect our breath. Our breath affects our body function. Our body function and health affect our speech. Our speech affects our actions. And our actions affect our destiny. In this way, connecting to our breath can change our lives.
