Wellness Wednesday: Recharge with Electrolyte Lemonade

Hi friends,  We've still got a few hot summer days left this year. Stay hydrated through the rest of the season with this refreshing drink, one of my new favorites.

xoxo,

Sukey

Electrolyte Lemonade is quite popular among New York’s raw foodies—and for good reason. It’s a breeze to whip up and provides essential nutrients (electrolytes like sodium and magnesium) that are easily lost in the summer heat. Maintaining electrolyte levels allows all the cells in our bodies to function properly, but we lose electrolytes through sweat. Instead of reaching for a sugary sports drink, try this natural alternative.

This refreshing beverage gets its satisfying sweet-and-salty taste from raw honey and Celtic Sea Salt. (Conventional table salt has been so processed that it no longer contains the trace elements and natural minerals in sea water. If you really crave salt, your body may also be crying out for magnesium. Make the switch to sea salt to get the minerals you need.)

Lemons help balance blood pH, provide Vitamin C and clean the liver and gallbladder. Add a few tablespoons of extra-virgin coconut oil to the mix to boost immunity and balance blood sugar after a tough workout.

Pour Electrolyte Lemonade into a thermos over ice and drink up after your next sweaty yoga class. We guarantee you’ll feel re-energized and nourished.

Ingredients

  • 3 organic lemons
  • 3 tablespoons organic extra-virgin coconut oil
  • 1 organic pear or apple
  • 2 teaspoons Celtic Sea Salt
  • 6 cups filtered or spring water
  • 6 tablespoons raw honey

Instructions
  1. Peel off the yellow skin of the lemons, but leave the white pith intact since it’s loaded with antioxidants. Slice each lemon into two or three pieces to make them easier to blend. While you’re at it, dig out any seeds you see with your knife. It’s okay if you don’t get them all.
  2. Remove the core of the pear or apple and chop into a few pieces.
  3. Blend all ingredients for 1 to 2 minutes. If the texture is too chunky for you, strain to remove some pulp.
  4. Refrigerate and serve over ice.

The Well Wisdom: Once you're hooked on basic Electrolyte Lemonade, try one of these fun variations.
  • Use Brazil nut milk or almond milk as a base instead of water and add a frozen banana (full of potassium, another key electrolyte) for a mineral-replenishing smoothie.
  • Add a tablespoon of goji berries to make pink lemonade.
  • Add a tablespoon of your favorite green powder for a green lemonade that's packed with even more vitamins.
