Wellness Wednesday: Your Very First Yoga Class
Happy New Year!
If your resolution is to finally try yoga, you're in luck: Jackie and I have put our heads together to come up with our top 5 tips for newbie yogis. Go for it!
xoxo,
Sukey
If you're new to the yoga studio, you can quit your worrying—we're here to guide you through your very first class. Arm yourself with these tips and just do it.
- Find a beginners class. If you don't know a reverse warrior from a tree pose, the intro class is for you. Make sure to let the teacher know you're a newbie so he or she can give your form some extra attention.
- Wear comfy, stretchy clothes. Nothing too baggy or your shirt may end up over your head in downward dog.
- Head to the back of the class—and not because you want to goof off. Plant yourself wherever you have the best view of other students so you can follow along.
- Set realistic expectations. You're probably not going to nail the headstand on the first try. Embrace your beginner status and give every pose your best shot.
- Check your ego at the door. No matter how athletic (or un-athletic!) you may be, yoga is a whole other beast. It's not a competition but an exploration. Keep that in mind and you'll keep coming back to the mat.
Tap the Well:
- If you're still too nervous to walk into a studio, try an online video class first. We dig the beginner classes from Yoga Download.
- If you want to be totally prepared when the teacher says "chaturanga," study up with the Yoga Free App, a collection of 250 poses with pictures and instructions.
- When you're finally ready to take the plunge, find the studios and classes in your area at YogaFinder.com.
