‘SVU’ cop backs gov DNA push
Police departments around the state — both real and fictional — are rallying behind Gov. Cuomo’s push for a statewide DNA database.
Mariska Hargitay, aka Detective Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: SVU,” recently posted a video on her anti-crime foundation’s Web site endorsing Cuomo’s plan for an unprecedented statewide DNA registry.
“We know that individuals who commit serious crimes like rape have broken the law before,” Hargitay says in the video.
“Now is the time for New York to use DNA to its fullest potential.”
Hargitay’s star power is just one part of Cuomo’s push to make the database a reality.
Next up, the administration will use a state Web site to post, in real time, every single instance in which DNA either solves a crime or leads to an exoneration.
