A Significant Moment Last Night

September 26, 2014 | BY Maile Zambuto | FILED UNDER JHF BLOG >

Last night, we watched with millions of viewers across the country as a NO MORE PSA aired during Thursday Night Football on CBS. And they’ll continue to be airing during this weekend’s football games across networks and during Monday Night Football on ESPN. Spearheaded by Joyful Heart and directed by our Founder & President, Mariska Hargitay, with Y&R’s Rachel Howald as our Creative Director, the NO MORE PSA campaign has generated more than 700 million media impressions to date—nearly 275 million on television alone. Needless to say, last night was a significant moment for us.

When I expressed my hope that the NFL's most recent commitment to do better by survivors would be a turning point on how they and other influential institutions prevent and respond to domestic violence and sexual assault, my expectations were not small. Like so many of you, my expectations are for there to be deep and meaningful changes. We’re encouraged by what we saw last night, and we’re hopeful and eager for more.

The NO MORE PSA shown provides powerful examples of the myths and excuses we so often hear that blame survivors and excuse perpetrators—the same ones that have been used to question and doubt Ray Rice’s then-fiancée these past several weeks.

Airing—and watching—a PSA isn’t the end. It’s the start of a much bigger conversation about how we support survivors and respond to this violence. The nation has focused its attention in a way I’ve never seen these past few weeks—and it’s critical that we respond with education for communities and support for survivors. We know it’s needed: people everywhere are asking how they can help, and calls and requests for services to local hotlines and shelters has skyrocketed.

Over the weekend and through Monday night, the spots will continue to air during NFL broadcasts. Please, get involved.

TAKE THE PLEDGE.

Domestic violence and sexual assault are not simply “women’s issues”—they affect all of us. I invite everyone—including the men in our community—to take the pledge to say NO MORE. Talk with men and boys in your life about healthy relationships and the importance of respecting themselves and others, including women and girls.

#SayNOMORE.

Share the NO MORE PSA video. Post the print ads to your timeline and Twitter feed by downloading them below or share them from Joyful Heart’s Facebook or Twitter feeds. And share why you say NO MORE by sharing your photo and message of hope in the NO MORE gallery.

GIVE.

Make a donation to Joyful Heart or to any one of the other local and national organizations working to support survivors. All of us need your support to continue our work. Visit our donate page here or find another organization to support at nomore.org.

A final and important note: As we continue to be inundated with news and information, some of it possibly triggering, we invite you to practice self-care to help process this information and mitigate additional trauma.
