Wellness Wednesday: Bend with the Flow

Hi friends,

We're all trying to be a little more mindful and a little more present. When things like negativity or stubbornness get in the way, try this simple meditation to restore focus and calm.

xoxo,

Sukey

If you've ever really tried to live in the present moment, you know how tough it can be to go with the flow.

Adapting to your circumstances and maintaining a positive outlook in any given moment is easier said than done. It's easier to focus on your own limitations, but the instant you do, you step further away from your authentic self and dharma, or unique life purpose. Criticism and self-doubt can be a breeding ground for negative thoughts, multiplying into a whirlwind of destructive "I am not ____ enough" statements. So how do we curb the negative thoughts?

Negativity makes us rigid and holds us back from expansion and growth, both internally and externally. An open heart and mind, on the other hand, make it easier to accept positivity—and vice versa: a positive outlook makes it easier to remain open. It's the flexibility of openness that creates the space for growth within us all. If you stubbornly fight against yourself or someone else, constantly pushing or pulling instead of just giving a little, eventually you will break.

Think of the willow tree, supple yet strong. Its roots are grounded firmly, but its branches are pliable and move with the wind to avoid breakage and damage. The ability to bend is what protects the tree, allowing it to flourish and withstand all of nature’s elements.

Do this: next time life throws a curveball your way, visualize the bending branches of a willow tree. Close your eyes and imagine yourself bending as well, perhaps doing your favorite yoga pose. Then, open your eyes and approach the situation with conscious openness and lend that same flexibility to how you treat yourself. Grounded yet open, you'll be stronger and more resilient in all that you do.

The Well Wisdom: Got a few minutes? Go to the nearest park and sit beneath the towering trees and their twisting, intertwined branches. Focus on your breath, sending it to all corners of your body. Feel the space you create with each inhale and allow your body to soften, releasing tension with every exhale. Invite more openness and flexibility into your body, and think back on these peaceful moments as you flow through your day.
