On Saturday, June 18th, the GenerationJOY Committee of the Joyful Heart Foundation partnered with SoulCycle for a Summer Kick-Off Ride in Bridgehampton, NY to support the foundation’s work to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever.
Almost 50 supporters participated in this ride hosted by Joe Aboud, Mel Cohn, Nicole Farkas, Emma Lasry, Melina Leodas, Ava and Sophia Schrager, and Becky Van Dercook. SoulCycle donated the 45-minute class and included songs inspired by Joyful Heart’s mission with lyrics focused on empowerment, hope, and love.
Each year, thousands of individuals do take the step of reporting their rape to the police and undergoing a rape kit exam. This invasive forensic examination of a victim’s body typically takes four to six hours to complete and is a testament to their hope for justice. And yet, hundreds of thousands of times, a decision is made by law enforcement and prosecutors not to process the kit for DNA evidence. It is estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits across the United States.
On Wednesday, June 1st, our San Francisco Bay Area Committee held its second TALK SF event focused on the rape kit backlog. Hosted by committee member Amy McNamara and her husband, Michael, the event gathered 45 individuals to discuss the appalling number of untested rape kits across the United States and delve into Joyful Heart’s advocacy work to enact reform on local, state, and federal levels.

On Tuesday, May 10, we gathered for our 2016 Joyful Revolution Gala at one of the great cultural institutions of the world: Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall, in the heart of New York City.

Ambrose, Lorraine Kirke, Sukey Novogratz, and Carrie Shumway; our staff; board of directors; and broader community in attendance, we were proud to honor Vice President Joe Biden for his commitment to ending violence against women and girls, and with Verizon, a company with a long-standing and fierce commitment to ending domestic violence. A chorus of voices joined us on stage throughout the evening to celebrate these heroes and our progress: Tina Fey, Queen Latifah, Natalie Merchant, Anthony Edwards, Samantha Ronson, Raúl Esparza, Jemima Kirke, Mark and Danielle Herzlich, Kaumaka‘iwa Kanaka‘ole, Kekuhi Keali‘ikanaka‘oleohaililani, Shawn Pimental, and more.
