The recent focus on sexual assault in the military has revealed that a significant number of men, as well as women, are among those sexually assaulted while serving.

In listening to an individual’s story, your response can have an enormous impact on that person’s healing journey.

At the beginning, it seems like an impossibly long journey. But as so many men have learned, the goal is reachable and the journey is well worth making.

It was always having a heart-to-heart with one or maybe two other people at a time, sitting on a bathroom sink or on a stoop. This was how I had shared my story up until 2013.

Vulnerability is not really weakness as we perceive, but is in fact strength. When we expose ourselves as flawed and are willing to show our vulnerability, it opens the door for others to do the same.

I learned long ago that repeating myths in an attempt to dispel them actually has the opposite effect. So here they are—just the facts about male sexual abuse.
