One Love Foundation Partnership Highlights Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

February 1, 2018 | BY Sarah Haacke Byrd | FILED UNDER JHF BLOG >

This Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, Joyful Heart Foundation and One Love Foundation are partnering to share information about healthy and unhealthy relationships. We will provide tips to help adults talk to young people about relationship violence, resources for you or a friend who may be in an abusive relationship, tools to support a survivor, and ways to get involved in stopping and preventing teen dating violence.

Together we believe change is possible. We believe starting the conversation in our communities—and elevating this dialogue nationally—will shape the next generation’s understanding of violence and abuse and change the way society thinks about and responds to it. And, we believe in the power of community to transform culture.

One in three women and one in four men will experience relationship violence in their lifetimes, and all of us will be in an unhealthy relationship at some point in our lives.

It can be difficult to recognize whether a relationship is healthy or not. As young people begin to have their first intimate relationships, understanding the difference between love and control can be confusing. We often conceal our problems from our friends and family, making it even harder for others to see the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship.

Through our partnership, we will share resources on our websites and social media. We invite you to watch One Love’s #ThatsNotLove videos, which shine a spotlight on unhealthy or emotionally abusive relationship behaviors—as well as the gray area between love and control. The campaign features the 10 warning signs of an unhealthy relationship including jealousy, isolation, and belittling.

Be sure to check out our resources, and join us on social media. Tweet at us @TheJHF and @Join1Love to find out more about unhealthy and healthy relationships and to send us questions or thoughts.

We are looking forward to learning more about teen dating violence as a community and what we can do together to prevent and end this violence.
